Resources

  • The collar consists of three metal/plastic parts, purchased separately at a supply store or online for a significant discount. There are three components you’ll need: a 1-inch D-Ring, a 1-inch Side-Release Buckle, and a 1-inch Tri-Glide Slider.
  • It’s all up to you! It’s time to have some fun, so choose a fabric you adore. Standard cotton fabric, or even a lush upholstery fabric, are two options I’d suggest. Anything with sequins or flexible material that can dig into your dog’s neck should be avoided.
  • Pick a thread that suits your fabric’s color and pattern.

Take a reading of the distance across the widest part of the piece.

To get an accurate measurement, layout your cloth on a flat surface and measure along the length. A medium-sized dog will fit in this collar.

This method uses a 1-inch buckle, which is suited for medium to big dogs, so I suggest cutting your material between 30 and 34 inches long.

Using a pair of scissors, make two identical strips.

To cut two strips of cloth, use a rotary cutter, scissors, or a straight tear (if you’re using 100 percent cotton fabric, you may snip the edge and tear a straight line). My strips are 31 inches long by 2 inches wide in this picture.

Join Two Pieces of the Same Material

Because our fabric strips are 2 inches wide and our collar buckles, sliders, and D-rings are 1 inch wide, we want to stitch the cloth strips together right now in a way that makes the collar fabric 1 inch wide once it is right-sided out and ironed.

Press the Fabric with an Iron

The finished product will be a wrinkly, snake-like tube that doesn’t yet resemble a collar. You need some iron for that!

Sew the Collar’s Two Ends Together

The corners of your cloth collar need to be addressed after you’ve pressed everything.

The Tri-Glide Slider

Put your fabric collar through the bottom and then up and down over and under the crossbar. The end of the fabric should be about one and a half inches long.

Box Stitch Sewing

Using a box stitch, sew the 1 and a half-inch tab to the collar.

Connect the D-Ring to the End of the Fabric

Slip the female side of the side-release buckle onto the D-ring and then into the fabric at the other end.

Trim everything after you’ve finished the final box stitch, and you’re done! With their custom-made, eye-catching collar, you can now take your dog for a walk in style.

Conclusion

In less than an hour, you can make a collar using a sewing machine and personalize it with a variety of interesting materials. Creating dog collars is an excellent approach to give your pet a fashionable look without breaking the bank.
